Ugg ‘n’ Ogg and the World’s First Dogg

Masham Town Hall, Little Market Place, Masham
12:00 - 13:00

In the fresh sparkling world just after the last Ice Age there were no dogs – not a single one. So how did we get our best friend and the World’s No 1 pet, the dog?

Well, luckily for us, along came two young hunter-gatherers called Ugg ’n’ Ogg to pall up with the wolves Tooth ‘n’ Claw and embark on a fun-packed adventure where despite flying meat bones, raging forest infernos, and even a time-travelling stick, they finally get to invent the dog and save us all from a life of doglessness.

This original play for families and dog lovers of all ages is inspired by the truly amazing evolutionary process that transformed the wolf into all the dogs that we see in the world today.

All tickets £6, available at Masham Community Office, 01765-680200.

Keith James: The Songs of Leonard Cohen

Masham Town Hall, Little Market Place, Masham
19:00 - 21:30

Songwriter Leonard Cohen was an unflinching character, with an exact sense of prose, wry humour, and the courage to wrestle with the unspoken, forgiving human frailty and indulgence with the stroke of each word. His music befriended an entire generation. Within every line of his writing, Leonard Cohen has been challenging us to listen more carefully, speak more thoughtfully, think more deeply and recognize our own vulnerability. Our World misses him very much.

With a lifetime reputation of performing in this exact way and an undying love of the ‘pure song’ Keith James gives you a concert of Cohen’s amazing material in the most intimate and sensitive way imaginable, exposing the solitary inner strength of his greatest songs in their original perfect form. Keith has performed almost 500 concerts of Leonard Cohen songs to more than 200,000 people. This has proved to be ‘life changing’ and one of the greatest honours in Keith’s 50 year career in music.

Included in the concert are Cohen songs including Famous Blue Raincoat, Sisters of Mercy, Suzanne, Bird on a Wire, and Hallelujah, alongside rarer and profound writing such as If it Be Your Aill, Joan of Arc, and Secret Life. Also included are Keith’s dramatic performances based on the work of Federico Garcia Lorca – Cohen’s greatest influence.

Tickets £15,at Masham Community Office, 01765-680200.

Kathryn Tickell and Amy Thatcher

Masham Town Hall, Little Market Place, Masham
19:30 - 22:00

Kathryn Tickell – Northumbrian pipes, fiddle, voice
Amy Thatcher – accordion, voice, clog dancing

Kathryn first took up the Northumbrian smallpipes at the age of nine, inspired by her family and the music of an older generation of traditional musicians. The stories of the people that lived and worked in rural Northumberland were part of her childhood and her personal evocation of this is heard in the traditional tunes and songs that she brings to audiences all over the world.

The intuitive musical interplay between Kathryn and Amy is born out of a long-standing creative friendship. Kathryn’s pipes marry beautifully with Amy’s exquisite accordion playing. A cascade of jigs, reels, heart-wrenching airs, together with percussive clog dancing makes for an irresistible mix.
Here’s a video of Kathryn’s band with Amy on clogs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzQO71BPHec
Kathryn has released seventeen of her own albums to date and has also recorded and performed with Sting, The Chieftains, Penguin Café Orchestra, Evelyn Glennie, Royal Northern Sinfonia, London Sinfonietta and many others. She has twice won “Musician of the Year” at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, was awarded an OBE in 2015 for services to folk music, and presents BBC Radio 3’s ‘Music Planet’.
