Carla’s main source of inspiration has always been the landscape: not so much an accurate depiction of a view, but an attempt to convey the feelings evoked by the beauty of the natural world; mountains, rivers, the moors, the sea, and the way that old buildings blend with the countryside they inhabit. She has a particular fascination with trees, which nearly always seem to find their way into her pictures. She always works by sketching a scene, using pen and ink and watercolour, then creating a larger picture in the studio from her sketches. For many years watercolour was her preferred medium; more recently she has used soft pastels, oils and acrylic.
