One on two, Two on One – Dry Stone Walls, their History, Development & Construction – Tony Keates
Tony will look at the origins of dry stone walls, their development over the centuries & how they were, and still are constructed. It will be illustrated mainly with examples of walls in the Yorkshire Dales, but will also look at the varying regional styles of walling that have developed.
Tony is a retired microbiologist and has been interested in industrial and local history since 1985. He was Chairman of the Cumbria Industrial History Society for five years, before he retired to the Yorkshire Dales where he now lives. During that time he carried out the first detailed surveys of lime kilns in the Lake District National Park and also organised and carried out the excavation of a 19th brick kiln on the Holker Hall Estate. Since moving to the Dales he has been involved with surveying lime kilns and the remains of the stone extraction industry in the Dales, and is also a National Park volunteer. He was one of the founder members of the Middleham and Dales Local History Group and is currently its secretary.
Non members are very welcome and are charged £3.00 per meeting.
