The Green Howards – Roger Chapman
REGIMENTAL RICHMOND is the illustrated story of how the 19th Regiment of Foot – nicknamed The Green Howards – became the infantry regiment associated with North Yorkshire. When the Depot was built in Richmond in 1877 most of the soldiers were recruited from the Dales, Moors, East Coast and Teesside. Two World Wars meant that most families have had someone who has served in this famous Regiment. Since 2006, when the amalgamation of all Yorkshire infantry regiments took place, the Museum in the centre of Richmond with its superb collection is the only reminder of The Green Howards.
Roger Chapman did his National Service basic training in the Richmond Depot in 1957 before taking a regular commission in the Green Howards from RMA Sandhurst. He served with the Regiment for 16 years. After a career in the expedition world, he returned to North Yorkshire to become the curator of the Green Howards Museum for 10 years until 2006.
