‘Cocoa, Pastilles, Bricks and Houses’ The History and Development of the Garden Village of New Earswick, York by Joseph Rowntree – Brian Jardine
Brian grew up in New Earswick and was raised by his Quaker guardians. He trained as a Quantity surveyor and worked for the Joseph Rowntree Housing Trust from 1984 until his retirement in 2015. He will speak about Joseph Rowntree Senior’s arrival in York in 1822, the early development of the Rowntree Company and the impact of Quaker entrepreneurs and business people on workers, employment practice, public health and treatment of those with mental health issues, pensions, etc. in England in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.
Non members are very welcome and are charged £3 per meeting.
