A United Kingdom is based on extraordinary true events. In 1947, Seretse Khama, the future king of Bechuanaland (now Botswana), met Ruth Williams, a London office worker. They were a perfect match, yet their proposed marriage was challenged not only by their families but by the British and South African governments.
Superbly acted by David Oyelowo and Rosamund Pike as the couple at the centre of the ensuing whirlwind, the film is beautifully directed by Amma Asante ( Belle), who uses stunning African vistas and subtle moments to tell an important and forgotten story.
“For all its progressive importance, this is first and foremost an impressively crowd-pleasing piece of intelligent screen entertainment.” – Mark Kermode, The Observer
