It’s Volunteers Week 2020 this week – an annual celebration and chance to say “thank you” for the contribution made by volunteers right across the UK. There was never a time to be more grateful and appreciate the value of volunteering than during this COVID-19 crisis.

Throughout the year, Mashamshire Community Office and Community Library depend on the experience and time, generously given, by its team of nearly 30 volunteers. But since the lockdown, an unprecedented number of volunteers have been needed to support folk who were self-isolating or shielded at home. The shout-out for Mashamshire volunteers in March didn’t disappoint – we now have 50-70 wonderful volunteers helping us out. Although our building is closed to the public, there has been lots to do…

  • Liaising with NYCC and other official bodies to find out official advice and info for our community
  • Taking calls for help, dealing with enquiries, and coordinating volunteers
  • Collecting and delivering hundreds of prescriptions, shopping and other errands
  • Researching and preparing these news updates every day – keeping everyone informed, including local business news
  • Publishing relevant info on the Mashamshire Life residents Facebook group and the Visitmasham visitors website and Facebook Page
  • Keeping MCO going behind the scenes – like other local businesses, we’ve been unable to earn vital funds from our usual activities so applying for government funding help has been a lifesaver

With only 30 paid staff hours per week, this would not have been possible without our volunteers. We estimate that during lockdown, our Mashamshire volunteers are contributing at least 248 free voluntary hours each week! Amazing – thank you.

Of course, this isn’t the first time that Masham’s Volunteers have stepped up in a crisis either…. Over 200 year ago, word went out that Napoleon had invaded, and the Masham Volunteers rallied behind Captain William Danby of Swinton Park and marched out to meet the foreign invader. They got as far as Thirsk before they discovered that the beacons had been lit by mistake. It had all been a false alarm! Sadly, we can’t say the same for the current crisis!

How to get involved – now and for the future
All the efforts of Mashamshire volunteers so far have been appreciated and will still be very much needed as the recovery phase develops and beyond. As our community and our businesses begin to work out the new normal and how to repair the damage done by the crisis, Mashamshire Community Office will be there to help. If you would like to get involved by volunteering your time and experience now or longer term, please do get in touch –
Phone 01765 680200 or email info@visitmasham.com.

GETTING HELP AROUND MASHAM – Prescriptions, Shopping, Social Contact

The Community Office has a list of over 70 volunteers in and around Masham who are available to help with shopping, prescription collection and any other issues. If you are self isolating and unable to go out for food or prescriptions for whatever reason, we can find a volunteer who can help you. If you are isolated at home and just want to feel a bit connected over the phone, we can find someone to chat to.

Please call 01765 680200 if you need help. We are open Mon-Fri, 10AM till 3PM

Groups of volunteers are coming together in many of Masham’s surrounding villages too. If you are initiating some activity to help in the current crisis, please let us know – email: info@visitmasham.com.

Here is a list summarising other community action and support. Click here to view.

More useful information is also listed on our Covid-19 Local Info Page here.

Our Masham Community Office crisis volunteers are local folk who have offered to help collecting prescriptions, shopping etc for ANYONE who is self isolating in our community. This might be because they, or a member of their household, has symptoms of Covid-19, or they may be isolating because their health makes them vulnerable, or they are over 70 and Boris has told them to stay indoors!

The NHS Volunteers are coordinated centrally by them with their focus exclusively on helping people whom the NHS has specifically identified as being vulnerable due to their health conditions – these people are “medically shielded”.

Of course there will be many volunteers who have volunteered for both the NHS and other organisations, but the Community Office volunteers are accessed and coordinated locally and are available to help anyone in the local community who is in need of support.

As lids are not provided for recycling bins, please could residents try to weigh down their recycling with the bags of paper on top to stop items blowing out in the wind and help stop the spread of litter in the area? Thank you for your co-operation

The two volunteer lists in Masham have now been combined. The Masham Churches list of helpers with food and shopping has now come together with the list of people helping with prescription collections which is coordinated by Mashamshire Community Office. The combined list of over 70 volunteers around Masham and the surrounding villages are available to help with shopping, prescription collection and any other issues.

If you have volunteered with either group, you may be contacted either by the Church or Mashamshire Community Office to help someone in need near you.

Please call 01765 680200 if you need help.

There are also local volunteer groups emerging in surrounding villages – we will try and keep up with these on our Covid-19 Local Info Page here.

NHS Volunteers are coordinated centrally by them and are focused on helping people who the NHS has specifically identified as being vulnerable due to their health conditions. The local volunteer groups above and coordinated locally and are available to help anyone in the local community who is in need of help.
